Gee-Gees Volleyball Players Recognized For Academic Success

As the Gee-Gees volleyball team prepares to head to Toronto this weekend to fight for the best playoff seeding we can get, we are reminded of another aspect of our student athletes that fills us with pride.

7 of our players (50%) of last year's squad were honoured today for their success in the classroom during the 2001-02 season. All seven of these players achieved an overall average of 80% or higher in their respective fields of study !

We congratulate and honour:
Amanda Purdy - 5th year - Setter - Bio-chemistry/Administration (Kanata, ON)
Amanda Morgan - 5th year - LS/RS - Human KInetics / Teacher Ed (Orleans, ON)
Kara Zakrzewska - 5th year - LS/RS - Human Kinetics (Mississauga, ON)
Eliane Bélanger - 4th year - MID - Electrical Engineering (Orleans, ON)
Michelle Moore - 3rd year - MID - Human Kinetics (Metcalfe, ON)
Alexandra Brown - 3rd year - LS/RS/S - Human Kinetics (Kanata, ON)
Ellen Barwise - 3rd year - Setter - Human Kinetics (O'Reilly, PEI)

This group of players are truly role models to younger student athletes that join our program.
Volleyball is only a part of the educational experience while at university and these young women set the example of high academic goals balanced with the desire to shoot for championships on the court.

The Gees are back on league focus this weekend as we travel to Toronto to try and grab home court advantage for the OUA Quarter Final game on February 15th. The Gees sit in 1st place in the OUA East but need one win over Toronto or York this weekend to secure the right to host the first playoff game.

After this weekend - the Gees return home for one final league match against Ryerson on February 8th; then it's full focus on the run for the OUA Banner and the right to represent Ontario at the National Championship in Laval.

We will keep you up to date early next week - think good Gee-Gee thoughts this weekend. A playoff game at Montpetit Hall would be one heck of a fun time !
