Gee-Gees Volleyball Starts Season With Impressive 3-0
Win Over Lakehead
After
traveling across the country to gain experience against top ten
teams, the Gees opened their league and home opener with a decisive
3-0 win over Lakehead University.
The
match started out with a sea-saw battle with both teams getting
out some initial game jitters. Ottawa fought to score the 8th
point and gain the advantage heading into the first technical
timeout. From that point on, the Gees continued to push with tough
serving, eventually winning the first set 25-15.
In
the seond and third sets, Ottawa continued to serve aggressively
as well use a
balanced offence and won 25-17 and 25-16 respectively.
"To
be honest, it has been a long time since I have been nervous to
start a season. This team has so much energy and focus right now,
I just wanted to make sure I did my job to let them go out there
and play. Head coach Lionel Woods commented after the game,
"This is the most balanced team I have ever coached and I
think our vets and rookies have all bought into the same game
plan and goals for not only this match but for the entire season.
"
Ottawa
took advantage of its pre-season training, which saw every player
compete against top ten teams, and used all fourteen players listed
on the roster for the match. It marked the debut of rookies Christine
Lamey (AY Jackson alumni), Kristen Haslett and Laura Simons.
Next
up for the Gees is the back end of the home and home double-header
vs. Lakehead University, tomorrow night, Nov. 1, 2003, at 6:30
pm.
