Gee-Gees Have Strong Showing In
2004-05 OUA All Star Awards
As
the OUA women's volleyball all star awards were announced today,
the Ottawa Gee-Gees squad was well represented with 3 different
players named to the 1st & 2nd teams as well as special recognition
for co-captain, Ellen Barwise who was awarded the prestigous Award
of Merit for 2004-05.
4th
year wing player, Ashley Keenan
(Port Stanley, Ontario) was named as an OUA
2nd team
all star. Ashley has spent 3 years as an anchor
for our wing hitting core and is known for her fire and readiness
to finish matches in the "clutch". Ashley finished the
season ranked #4 in Ontario & #15 in Canada in kills per game
with 3.42
2nd
year wing player, Christine Lamey
(Kanata, Ontario) was named an OUA
1st team all star. Christine came from the Ottawa
club system as one of the best this city has ever produced. In
just her 2nd year in the OUA she has made people sit up and take
notice with her two tournament all star awards this year in national
level tournaments (All star at the Winnipeg & Ottawa U tournaments).
Lamey finished the regular season ranked #1 in Ontario & #3
in Canada in kills per game with 3.95; #1 in Ontario & #3
in Canada in points earned per game with 4.96 and #9 in Ontario
in kill percentage with .268 - all of these numbers and accomplishments
certain give reason for Gees fans to get excited for the future.
5th
year, starting setter and co-captain, Ellen
Barwise (O'Leary, PEI) received top recognition
as a 2004-05 OUA 1st team all star
and was also named this year's Award
of Merit recipient; given to the OUA player who
best demonstrates outstanding commitment and dedication to
OUA volleyball as well as a true example of leadership and contribution
to the general university community. Ellen’s
career has been celebrated by her performance and achievement
but what has stood out even more in terms of dedication &
commitment is her return to playing after a car accident over
X-mas in 2002 sent her to the hospital with a broken back and
the uncertainty of her future in sport. She sat our the second
half of the 2002-03 season only to return to OUA volleyball with
a renewed commitment and a desire to try even the next level of
our sport in terms of the CIS National B team with the hopes of
representing our conference as a member of the FISU Games in the
summer of 2005.
Ellen
has been:
• 5 year member of University of Ottawa Volleyball
• Member of 2004 summer CIS National B team
• 4 consecutive years as an Academic All-Canadian
• 2 year captain of University of Ottawa Volleyball
• 2003-04 Gee-Gees Volleyball MVP
• 2003-04 OUA 1st Team All Star
• 2004-05 McGill Tournament All Star
• 2004-05 Ryerson Tournament All Star
• Currently #1 in Ontario & #3 in Canada in set assists
per game
• Currently #1 in Ontario & # 3 in Canada in kill percentage
• Represented PEI in 2001 Summer Canada Games for Beach
Volleyball
• 4 years as an instructor & coordinator of volleyball
camp program serving over 1500 athletes age 8-18
• Continues to be a model of fair play in her manner, demeanor
& style of play
• Has achieved Dean’s List status at the University
of Ottawa for the last 4years
• Currently a full time Masters student in the Sports Admin
program
• Ellen is currently involved in a university commissioned
research program aimed at identifying contributing factors to
fan attendance, support or lack of support for amateur sport in
Canada & specifically in Ottawa
