Four
Gees Named To 2007-08 All Star Teams
Fifth-year
power hitter Christine Lamey was selected Thursday
as one of four uOttawa Gee-Gees named 2007-08 Ontario University
Athletics women’s volleyball all-stars. Lamey,
23, a four-time OUA all-star from Kanata in her fifth and final
interuniversity season, is the CIS leader in points per game (4.76)
and is second in Canada in kills per game (4.08). A former hockey
and baseball player who didn’t pick up volleyball until
grade 11, Lamey will be looking to expand her beach volleyball
career after a successful gold medal win at Ontario provincials
and a bronze medal performance at the nationals during the summer
of 2007. Lamey may also explore pro opportunities in Europe. "I
am grateful to have had the opportunity to play volleyball at
university,” said Lamey. “But I think I’ve still
got a couple of years left in me, so let’s see what I can
do with it.”
uOttawa
team-mate Kirsten Brouse, a fourth-year middle,
was named the recipient of the OUA Award of Merit as well as a
first-team all-star, both for the first time.A three-year starter,
two-time OUA all-star (2006-07 second-team) and four-time CIS
Academic All-Canadian, Brouse, 21, a true walk-on to the Gee-Gees
from Bracebridge, ON, is the co-founder of the uOttawa Student-Athlete
Council.
Fifth-year
setter Laura Simons, 22, regarded as the Gee-Gees
quarterback and a team co-captain with Lamey, was selected a first-team
all-star for the third time. Simons,
from London, ON, said she looks forward to being stepping back
from competitive sport, resting an aching back and returning home
after graduating in April.
