GAME STORY:
Christine Lamey had 11 kills to lead all players as the uOttawa Gee-Gees swept the York Lions 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the team’s final home match of 2007-08 to advance to next weekend’s OUA Final Four tournament at No. 9 Toronto.

uOttawa defeated the Lions for a fourth straight year in the first OUA playoff round 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 over 73 minutes.

“These kids are hungry and they are pumped and there is a lot of rhythm in our play when we get playing,” said uOttawa head coach Lionel Woods.

The Gee-Gees, which finished 9-2 in conference play at home this season, came back from being down 1-5 in the first game to the tie the match 8-8 before scoring five straight points leading to a 25-21 victory.

Lamey, a fifth-year leftside/rightside hitter and team co-captain from Kanata, ON, who entered the match as the CIS points-per-game leader, was instrumental in keeping the momentum in uOttawa’s favour throughout the match with thunder ball swings of her right arm.

“She looked fresher today than I thought she looked in September, which tells me she is pretty hungry on her last run at it,” Woods said.

The Gee-Gees, after winning the Ontario conference title last season for the first time in 21 years, put away the Lions 3-0 in 77 minutes in the second-to-last regular season match this year at York.

The Gee-Gees will face McMaster in one OUA semifinal Friday, February 22 (at either 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. ET - time TBA) while the host No. 9 Toronto will face Waterloo in the other semifinal.

The gold medal final is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 23.

“I think McMaster is No. 1 going in,” said Woods. “They beat Toronto and us so what the heck - let’s play them right away.”
