GGVBALL WEEKLY UPDATE
GGVBALL
– November 3rd, 2008
Gee-Gees
move to 5-1 on the young season and
sit in 1st place in the OUA East
Notes
from this past weekend: (vs. Lakehead)
Gee-Gees Volleyball returned home Sunday, on a late night flight
from Thunder Bay, with two more wins in their pocket and a firm
hold on 1st place in the OUA East division. The Gees have been
working hard at finding a consistent rhythm of play through the
early part of the season and things were on course this weekend
as 2nd year libero, Claudia Seguin, took control of the back court
with a 70% passer rating; Ariane Thibault set the pace with 22
earned points over the two matches and Tess Edwards recorded 45
set assists and 16 earned points of her own. Another strong point
for the Gees this weekend was dominating execution of a blocking
system that has taken some time to get familiarized with; the
team recorded 20 plus stuff blocks over the two matches and sent
back 30 balls total as a team, which really starts to make back
row defence more simple for us as the match goes on. The size
and athleticism of this year’s roster is beginning to impact
the match, and will hopefully continue to cause opposing offenses
to adjust and modify from their favourite game plans.
Up
next:
@ McMaster – November 8th – 1:00 pm
@ Guelph – November 9th – 1:00 pm
This
coming weekend will be a great road game test for the new look
Gees as they take on the McMaster Marauders in a match-up of the
past two OUA Champions (uOttawa in 2006-07 & McMaster in 2007-08).
This match promises to be a high flying affair with both teams
relying on athletic setting and attack systems which should lead
to some great defence and a back and forth battle in blocking
and digging; at any given moment the two teams could have a combined
9-10 six foot plus players on the floor.
The
second match of the weekend will be no easy follow up as Guelph
has impressed everyone early in this young season with a 3-2 win
over Toronto and a strong 3-1 record to sit tied for second in
the OUA West division.
The
Gees will be at home next:
Saturday
November 22nd @ 2:30 pm vs. long time rivals York Lions
