Recruiting Philosophy
When the coaching staff of the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team sits down to decide who to recruit, who to pick and who to identify for the future there is a common understanding of the kind of person and athlete that we have built this program around. To help young players who may be considering the University of Ottawa, we have defined some of the attributes, characteristics and traits that are most commonly found in the players that we are looking to add to our family.

Many sports teams and media people talk about these general components but what we have done here is to define what they mean to us; and in doing so are trying to help you understand some of the priorities and goals of our team.

It should also be pointed out that the Gee-Gees do indeed place a premium on the first area that is defined. We use the "character" component of evaluation as at least 50% of our total decision. Often times we can teach and train many of the required athletic and volleyball skills; however, a certain amount of existing character is the basis of the strength andconsistency of our team over the years.

When our coaching staff discusses player potential and athlete value these are the definitions we use.
We are looking for people that display the highest percentage of the characteristics and elements below:

I. Personal Character: (50%)
~ consistent intensity ~ body language of confidence
~ determination to overcome obstacles ~ desire to learn and look for knowledge
~ self motivation for excellence ~ reaction and recovery from mistakes
~ adaptability - "coachability" ~ readiness to compete, no matter what
~ social interaction with others ~ selfless behavior
~ self respect ~ respect for opponents and others around you
~ attention to detail ~ secure with self - not always looking for praise
~ strong, positive personality ~ internal motivation as main drive
~ moral character and discipline ~ has trust of others around

II. Athletic Ability: (25%)
~ kinesthetic sense - body part awareness (experience related) ~ jumping ability
~ body control and dynamic movement ~ overall body strength
~ reaction time ~ flexibility
~ movement ability - smooth and dynamic vs choppy or lethargic ~ efficiency of movement
~ anaerobic and aerobic fitness ~ body potential (height, strength, etc.)

III. Volleyball Ability: (25%)
~ basic skill competence ~ experience - percentage of potential realized
~ game understanding - perceived potential ~ reading / anticipation ability
~ advanced skill competence (angles, player tendencies, creating options, defensive movement)
~ consistency ~ versatility displayed
